It's now fully digital — no more paper
The paper SAT is gone. Every student now takes the test inside Bluebook, College Board's secure testing app, on a personal or school-provided device (or one borrowed from College Board). Bluebook handles your timer, your navigation between questions, the built-in tools, and submission. There's no answer sheet to bubble in and no booklet to flip through — your entire test lives on the screen.
Why College Board moved digital
The shift to digital wasn't just modernization for its own sake. The main drivers were:
- A shorter, less fatiguing test. Going from about three hours to just over two reduces test-taker burnout, which makes scores a better reflection of ability than endurance.
- Faster scores. Digital scoring returns results in days rather than weeks.
- Better security. Each student effectively receives a unique test form, which makes large-scale cheating far harder.
- Adaptive precision. A digital platform can adjust difficulty to each student, measuring ability more accurately with fewer questions (more on this below).
- Built-in tools. A graphing calculator, formula sheet, and annotation tools are integrated, removing some logistical friction from test day.
Digital SAT format at a glance
The test has two sections, each split into two modules. You finish all of Reading and Writing before moving to Math, with a break between sections.

A few things worth knowing about that 98:
- A small number of questions are unscored "pretest" items — two per module, so roughly 4 in Reading and Writing and 4 in Math — that College Board uses to develop future tests. That leaves about 90 scored questions. You cannot tell which questions are pretest, so treat every question as if it counts.
- Each module is separately timed. You can move freely within a module — skip, come back, flag, and change answers — but once a module's time ends, it's locked. You cannot return to Module 1 after starting Module 2.
- The ~10-minute break falls between the Reading and Writing section and the Math section.
The Reading and Writing section in depth
Reading and Writing (RW) combines reading comprehension and writing/language skills into one section. It's 54 questions over 64 minutes (two 27-question, 32-minute modules), all multiple choice with four answer options.
The defining feature of Digital SAT RW is its structure: instead of long passages with many attached questions, you get short passages — roughly 25 to 150 words — with exactly ONE question each. Some questions are paired with a brief data graphic or table. This means you read a new, self-contained text for nearly every question. 1. Information and Ideas
These questions test reading comprehension and reasoning using the text (and sometimes a chart). You'll be asked to identify central ideas, locate explicit details, draw logical inferences, and use data in graphics to support or complete a claim. The skill here is staying anchored to evidence in the passage rather than your outside knowledge.
2. Craft and Structure
This domain covers vocabulary in context, text structure and purpose, and connections across two related texts. "Words in context" questions — choosing the most logical and precise word for a blank — are common and reward a strong, nuanced vocabulary. Cross-text questions ask how two short passages relate (agreement, disagreement, one extending the other).
3. Expression of Ideas
Here the focus shifts to effective writing. You'll improve sentences and short passages for rhetorical purpose — choosing the most effective transition, or selecting the sentence that best accomplishes a stated goal (such as emphasizing a contrast or introducing a conclusion). A notable question type asks you to synthesize bulleted notes into a sentence that achieves a specific aim.
4. Standard English Conventions
This is grammar and mechanics: sentence boundaries, subject-verb and pronoun agreement, verb tense, punctuation (commas, semicolons, colons, dashes), and modifier placement. These are rule-based questions, which makes them some of the most learnable points on the entire test — drilling the conventions pays off quickly.
The Math section in depth
Math is 44 questions over 70 minutes (two 22-question, 35-minute modules). Roughly 75% are multiple choice and 25% are student-produced response (SPR) — "grid-in" questions where you type your own numeric answer instead of picking an option.
Word problems are common, and many are set in real-world contexts (science, economics, social science). The content spans four domains:
1. Algebra
The foundation: linear equations and inequalities in one and two variables, systems of linear equations, and linear functions. This is the largest content area, so fluency with linear relationships — solving, graphing, and interpreting them — is essential.

The Desmos calculator and reference sheet
Two built-in tools make Math more approachable:
- A Desmos graphing calculator is available for the entire Math section — not just part of it. Learning to use it well (graphing equations to find intersections, zeros, and maxima) can turn slow algebra into a few keystrokes. You may also bring your own approved calculator, but most students find the embedded Desmos sufficient.
- A formula reference sheet is provided on screen, listing common area, volume, and special-triangle relationships. You don't need to memorize those particular formulas — but knowing when to apply them still matters.
Grid-in (SPR) questions
About a quarter of Math is student-produced response: you type your answer rather than choosing one. The entry rules have real quirks — for example, you write improper fractions or decimals instead of mixed numbers (enter 11/4 or 2.75, never 2 3/4), and there's no penalty for guessing. How the adaptive format works
The Digital SAT is multistage adaptive, and the word "stage" matters. It is section-adaptive, not question-by-question adaptive. Here's the high-level picture:
- Module 1 of each section contains a mix of easy, medium, and hard questions. Everyone sees a comparable first module.
- Your performance on Module 1 determines which Module 2 you get: a relatively easier set or a relatively harder set.
- The difficulty of the Module 2 you're routed into affects the score range you can reach. Reaching the very top of the scale requires the harder Module 2 path.
Within any module, you still have full control — skip, flag, return, and revise answers freely — but once Module 1 ends, you can't go back to it. This design is why your first module carries extra weight, and why pacing strategy differs from the old paper test.

How scoring works
Your Digital SAT total score ranges from 400 to 1600, made up of two section scores:
- Reading and Writing: 200–800
- Math: 200–800
A few key principles:
- Rights-only scoring. There is no penalty for wrong answers. Every blank is a guaranteed zero, so you should never leave a question unanswered — guess if you have to.
- Equating and scaling. Raw correct answers are converted to scaled scores so results are comparable across test forms and difficulty paths. Test day and Bluebook basics
You'll take the test in Bluebook, which you install and check beforehand. A few features you should be comfortable with before test day, not on it:
- Timer. Each module shows a countdown. You can hide it to reduce anxiety, and it warns you when time is running low.
- Mark for review. Flag any question to revisit it later within the same module.
- Question navigator. A panel shows every question in the module at a glance, including which you've answered and which you've flagged, so you can jump around quickly.
- Annotation and answer eliminator. You can highlight passage text and add notes, and cross out answer choices you've ruled out.

1. Practice full-length and adaptive — not just question sets
Doing isolated drills builds knowledge, but the Digital SAT tests knowledge under realistic, adaptive conditions. You need reps where Module 1 actually routes you into a harder or easier Module 2, where the timer is live, and where the on-screen tools are exactly what you'll use on test day. That's the only way to calibrate pacing and build stamina for the real format.
